In the years of Vietnam War, the Vinh Moc tunnels (located in Vinh Moc village, Vinh Thach Commune, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province) are known as “dead parallel”. Destroyed areas from the enemy using air-raid bombers and artillery fire from the fleet at sea. Alas it is from the fierce battles that the local villagers made a slogan “They fight – we stop digging, the fighting stops – we dig” and the people of Vinh Moc were able to create a home underground.
The tunnel system consists of three levels. The first level is 12m deep and used as food storage, and the second is 15m underground and used as weaponry storage, the deepest is 23m and was used to avoid the bombing raids. The whole of the system has 13 outlets, including 7 gates to the sea, 6 gates to the hills, each tunnel is considered as ventilation.
A trip to Vinh Moc is just amazing to learn all about the locals who lived and sheltered there during the bombing raids in the Vietnam War. These tunnels, which are still in great condition, have a small section that are open to the public and there’s also a little museum to wander around too.
